Model UN Update and AmeriMUNC Conference Deadline

From FXCMUN Advisor Stephanie Young

Hello families! Stephanie Young here, writing to you in my capacity as the advisor to the Foxcroft Model United Nations club. Foxcroft’s Model United Nations club (FXCMUN) was reintroduced on campus by sisters Morgan R. ’17 and Elsie R. ’21 during their years at Foxcroft. Elsie’s leadership throughout the COVID years, especially her ability to keep MUN relevant and fun, helped to maintain Model UN’s presence on campus today.
I am proud to say that under the leadership of our Secretary-General Sarah F. ’24 and our UnderSecretary Jeanne T-L. ’25, we are seeing a surge in Model UN membership. To wit, in our first conference of the school year, hosted by the Steward School, we had nine girls participate — four returning students and five new ones.

The Steward School Conference offered three committees for our students. One was the General Assembly of Monsters vs. Humans, where our students represented monsters and humans, and they had to come up with resolutions on the topics of Monsters Rights and Human/Monster Integration. The other two were crisis committees: one based in a world dealing with a zombie virus and the other set during the French Revolution. Foxcroft was well represented on each of the committees, and at the end of the conference, two from our delegation were recognized for their exceptional skills. Ellie W. ’27 earned Honorable Mention for her work on the Humans vs. Monsters committee as Fae Buckman, a fairy, and Anila S. ’25 earned Outstanding Delegate (2nd place) for her work on the French Revolution crisis committee as Charlotte Corday (an actual revolutionary assassin!).

And we are just getting started! On November 11, I will take 14 students to American University for training at their Washington International Relations Conference (WIRC), where students spend the morning and early afternoon in sessions learning how to Model UN and then have a practice run in the late afternoon and early evening to test their new skills. FXCMUN is covering the cost of this training conference. Foxcroft has also been invited to a conference in December at Thomas Edison High School in Fairfax, VA. These conferences, along with on-campus meetings, will help us to prepare for the event of the year — the American University AmeriMUNC conference in February.

The AmeriMUNC conference is the biggest and most anticipated conference of the year for students in FXCMUN. The conference consists of three days and two nights of Model UN with high schoolers from all over the world! We all convene in Washington, DC, and participate in debates on the American University campus. What makes this conference exceptional is that all the committees address the same region of the world, and all the committees deal with relevant, current, real-world issues. This year’s theme is “The African Century,” and the committees will focus on issues such as continental development, poaching, sand shortages, abuses of the cocoa industry, and health crises, to name a few.

Participation in the AmeriMUNC conference requires permission from parents as the fees are larger than our usual high school-hosted conferences. With only 12 spots on the Foxcroft Delegation, space is limited! Demand is very high, and this conference has already reached capacity, but luckily, I reserved our spaces in advance! Student registration and payment of the registration fees (or permission to bill home accounts) are due by November 17, 2023. Students may email or see me to register for this conference.
